CHAPTER IX

The path narrowed down until they had to walk in single file. The warrior went first, lighting up the shadows with his torch. The Ulsar followed with a light step. Shangrin went next, then Smirno, who was having a hard time keeping up. Gregory brought up the rear. As they plunged deeper into the crater, the stars disappeared one by one.

The barbarian and the Ulsar stopped at a point where the path seemed to widen and end. Shangrin's eyes searched the darkness, unable to see on the side of the chasm anything to explain the purpose of the expedition.
